Pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk is rebuilding parts of its workforce after a year marked by significant layoffs, with plans to add around 2,000 employees in 2026 as it sharpens its focus on high-growth areas, according to Bloomberg.
The hiring push follows a major workforce reduction in 2025, when the company cut nearly 9,000 roles—its largest restructuring to date. The cuts, affecting about 11% of the workforce, were part of a wider effort led by CEO Mike Doustdar to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and redirect resources toward priority business segments, particularly its expanding diabetes and obesity portfolio. The company expected to save $1.26 billion annually
The latest phase of hiring reflects a more calibrated strategy. Rather than expanding headcount across the board, Novo Nordisk is focusing on roles closely aligned with long-term growth priorities. Recruitment is expected to strengthen capabilities in production, research, and commercial operations tied to its core therapies.
The company is reshaping its structure to better align with evolving business demands, while maintaining tighter control over costs even as it invests in future growth.
The company, which developed the semaglutide drug Ozempic, is also doubling down on the consumer-driven obesity market.
“This means instilling an increased performance-based culture, deploying our resources ever more effectively, and prioritising investment where it will have the most impact—behind our leading therapy areas,” the CEO had earlier said.
The layoffs also reflect a broader trend across the pharmaceutical industry, where companies are increasingly reallocating talent toward high-value therapies and innovation-driven functions, while scaling back in slower-growth areas.
For Novo Nordisk, this balancing act will be key to remaining competitive in a market defined by rising demand, pricing pressures, and rapid scientific advancement.
